Forbidden to help on that case, the Investigators are contacted by Alfred Hitchcock to help a friend of his who has been beset by gnomes. Unknown to the boys, the case of gnomes and the museum robbery are connected by a group of clever criminals.

A local eccentric potter disappears from the Jones Salvage Yard, and the Three Investigators join in the search to find him. The Potter's relatives come to visit and witness the presence of flaming footprints in the Potter's house.
